Turns out the ingredient my son is allergic to is a paraben replacement. I have a gripe about EWG and similar advocacy groups. They don’t do household products just personal care products afik. It was really helpful figuring out what products my son was allergic to and which he could use safely. Skin Safe is a project of the Mayo Clinic. unnatural I guess? And what might be the most natural by some definitions is definitely not the most safe. So everyone is looking for a balance between what might loosely be called natural and. ![]() But to me that’s not an issue with the agency, that’s an issue with words like “natural” as product descriptors.Ī quick example: what is “natural” childbirth? Vaginal? No epidural? No drugs at all? Not in a hospital? In the woods with no one to help? People use it to say something along the lines of “reminds me of the positive things I associate with the natural world” but most people do prefer to live in human-modified environments overall and take advantage of those positives. So yes, I agree that if there are ideas within those words that you attribute to them and find meaningful you are on your own. There are some definitions around organic but there are also some (organic industry led) misconceptions that organic means less toxic or more environmentally sustainable and those are not correct either. There’s no regulation around it because it has nothing to do with safety or efficacy or environmental sustainability or anything else. Honestly, as a biologist, one of my biggest issues with the granola side of moderately granola is that the word natural is pretty meaningless. Michigan State University: Natural, Organic & Conventional Cosmetics think that’s why there’s so much distrust in some federal entities because they don’t regulate things like that in the first place □□♀️ but I do agree with that distrust of otherwise well meaning safe institutions is detrimental to society, and sometimes doing “your own research” can lead to a lot of misinformation that’s super dangerous-so I hear you there. The FDA currently doesn’t have any regulation on the term “natural”, or what products/companies can use the word natural. When companies are left unchecked to put terms like “natural” and “non toxic” on their products with no backing or regulation to those terms, there’s something wrong. Maybe we’re talking about different things? I don’t doubt there are US federal entities have good intentions, but sometimes the execution is mediocre at best.
